Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft's current LTSC release. With newer security defaults plus Hyper-V, storage and hybrid-cloud improvements, it forms the modern deployment base after Windows Server 2022.
Microsoft Lifecycle lists Windows Server 2025 support starting on 1 November 2024, with Mainstream Support ending 13 November 2029 and Extended Support ending 14 November 2034. Standard, Datacenter, Datacenter: Azure Edition and Essentials are covered.
The release adds security, performance, storage, Hyper-V and hybrid-management improvements over Windows Server 2022. Not every workload needs an immediate upgrade; application and licensing compatibility remain primary criteria.
Updated defaults and protections
Virtualization improvements
Faster storage and NVMe scenarios
Azure and hybrid integration options
Windows 11-style shell experience
Broad in-place path from 2012 R2 and later
Microsoft states that Windows Server 2025 expands in-place upgrades to as many as four versions and supports direct upgrade from Windows Server 2012 R2 and later. Roles, editions and application compatibility still need validation.
RDP-dependent business software, IIS/.NET applications, Active Directory, file services and Windows-specific automation are common use cases.
After delivery, verify edition, build, disks and network profile. Check firewall and update status before exposing RDP.

VPN/RD Gateway, IP restrictions, NLA, updates and account lockout should be layered.
For new deployments and a longer lifecycle, 2025 is the natural candidate. If vendor applications, drivers or licenses only support 2022, validate the vendor matrix before upgrading a stable system.
Advantage for legacy vendor apps
Good default for new VPS deployments
Check application + SQL + RDS licensing together
