MIGRATION STEPS

Steps to migrate from ESXi to Proxmox VE

The migration should be carried out with careful planning and a testing phase to minimize the risk of production downtime.

List every virtual machine on the vCenter or ESXi host, along with guest OS versions, disk sizes and dependencies.

Check guest OS compatibility

Verify that each VM's operating system is compatible with KVM/VirtIO drivers; flag any systems that require older or specialized drivers.

Plan the storage migration path

Allocate enough ZFS or Ceph storage on the target Proxmox node and calculate the temporary space needed during the transfer.

Export the virtual machines as OVF/OVA

Frequently asked questions about migrating from VMware to Proxmox

Is a live migration from ESXi to Proxmox possible, or is it always offline?

There's no direct vMotion-equivalent live migration between the two platforms; the standard method is to shut down the VM, export it as OVF/OVA or a disk file, import and test it on Proxmox, then cut over during a short maintenance window. Some third-party tools can shrink that window to minutes, but it's never fully live.

Will Windows VMs need new drivers?

Yes. VMware VMs typically use VMware's virtual hardware (LSI Logic, VMXNET3); for the best performance on Proxmox, switch the disk controller and network adapter to VirtIO and install the VirtIO driver package inside Windows — otherwise the VM may fail to boot.

What replaces VMware Tools?

The equivalent of VMware Tools is the QEMU Guest Agent; once installed inside the VM and enabled on the Proxmox side, it provides IP reporting, clean shutdowns and file-system-consistent backups.

Can I run a mixed VMware and Proxmox environment during the transition?
