What are IP Classes?

IP addresses are divided into different classes depending on network size and intended use.

A

Class A IP (1-126)

Class A IP addresses are designed for very large networks. These are addresses whose first octet is between 1-126 .

255.0.0.0
CIDR
/8
Max Host
16,777,214
B

Class B IP (128-191)

Class B IP addresses are designed for medium-sized networks. These are addresses whose first octet is between 128-191 .

Format
N.N.H.H
Subnet Mask
255.255.0.0
CIDR

C

Class C IP (192-223)

Class C IP addresses are designed for small networks. These are addresses whose first octet is between 192-223 . It is the most commonly used IP class.

Note: IP Classes and CIDR

The IP classification system (classful addressing) has now been largely replaced by the CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) method. CIDR allows more flexible allocation of IP address blocks and is specified with prefix lengths such as "/24". However, IP classes are still important to network fundamentals and historical context, and these classes are widely referenced by network technicians.
